The basic definition of biodegradable sunscreen is a sunscreen that breaks down naturally in the water. Sunscreen in a necessity whenever you are out in the sun for prolonged periods of time, but the harmful ingredients that are found in many of these products make it dangerous for the environment. It is reported that somewhere between 4000 and 6000 tons of sunscreen enters the water from swimmers each and every year. This is enough to do a great deal of damage to the ecosystem, as it acts in a similar manner to an oil spill. While it might be on a smaller scale than a massive oil spill, those who are not wearing biodegradable sunscreen are usually in areas with a particularly sensitive ecosystem, such as a coral reef. In the end, these reefs are suffocated by these oils, which is one of the reasons why as much as 25% of the Earth's coral reef is in danger.
